FAQ
The Answers You Need
We understand that running an animal shelter or rescue organization is time-consuming, so we are committed to an efficient collaboration with you. See below for steps 1-2-3 of your involvement.
1. What traits are you looking for in a service dog candidate?
1-2 years old (possibly up to 3 years old).
Around 40-60 pounds.
English Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds, or mixes of these breeds tend to have the needed traits.
Looks friendly to the general public who may or may not like dogs. This will make life in public settings easier for the owner and service dog.
Trainability: Highly motivated by kibble.
Confident.
Generally calm and recovers quickly from loud noises or strange, new experiences.
2. We have a dog that meets this description! What do I do next?
Notify Dibs For Dogs! To ensure dogs are not put through unnecessary transport and training, we have an evaluation protocol set by the trainer to follow. Tina Matney, based in the Memphis area, will arrange to make videos per this protocol.
3. What are the next steps after dogs pass this video evaluation?
There are two scenarios:
First, Dibs for Dogs could foster to adopt. Upon further evaluation after 2-3 weeks, DFD may arrange for transportation to the trainer.
Second, the dog could remain at the shelter/rescue with “dibs” until DFD can foster or arrange transportation. We understand that the shelter/rescue gets full sometimes. In that case, Tina Matney will arrange for temporary boarding.
4. What else can I do to help?
Let us know if you would like to learn to assess and take videos of the dog's behavior.
After this training, we are asking if you would be willing to provide brief videos of prescribed interactions with dogs you believe are potential service dog candidates.
Until then, Tina Matney can do assessments and videos in the kennel and outside of the kennel.
